My help is from the Lord

My help is from the Lord

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

1 Kgs 17:1-6, Mt. 5:1-12. Today’s first describes how Elijah the prophet realised that his help came from the Lord God as he remained in the desert east of the Jordan River. Elijah, risked his life by announcing a message of impending disaster because of the sinfulness of the king and the people. The message was a promise of impending danger of drought in the land of Israel. We can experience the voice of Elijah in the words of the Psalmist: “My help is from the Lord who made heaven and earth.” Since God created the Heaven and the earth, God can control the weather and the animals that God created. God provided the help Elijah needed as he waited in the eastern desert.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus promulgates the “Beatitudes,” which is the right attitude to life. Jesus is the New Moses on the Mount proclaiming the new rules just as Moses had from Mount Sinai for the chosen people of old. The Beatitudes projects a reversal for people in trying situations: the poor in spirit, which is an attitude of one with an attitude of not letting possessions rule their lives, he mournful, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the clean of heart, the peacemaker and the persecuted. Jesus encouraged those who were finding life difficult. Jesus reassured them that God will meet their needs and take care of them. All they need do is acknowledge that their “help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”

May the Lord send us His love and grant us His mercy! Amen!! Good morning and have a productive week!!!
