The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of men

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Eccl. 11:9-12:8, Lk. 9:43-45. Today's first reading helps us to recall that at the end of the ages, the number of our years on earth will not matter, but the quality of the life we live. Such quality can be achieved only when we boldly engages life and seize the opportunity of the moment to do things that are worthwhile. In all things that we are able to do and in the capacity of doing them, we shall be made accountable for them. Thus, we are challenged to make good use of the present moment, being mindful of God and our duty to give an account of our life. If we neglect our responsibilities, we shall also be made accountable for them as well. The Lord knows everything in our hearts and minds and He shall judge us by everything He knows of us. We have been given the opportunities and the time to do the things that God has shown us, to be His faithful disciples and witnesses in the midst of our communities.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus prepares His disciples for the difficult times ahead, when “the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of men.” At this point, the disciples were afraid to ask Jesus the meaning of His words. Had they dared to ask, they would have received answers enlightening their path. As they came closer to Jerusalem Jesus repeated the same warning, telling them that hope for new life with God had to go through the gates of death. Christians have hope for the future to help them bear the crosses of life and arrive at life’s eternal possibilities. Jesus felt compelled to go to Jerusalem, dangerous as it was, because that city must hear His message, even if it led to His death. Today, we are called to make the priorities of Jesus our own, to go about God the Father’s business, to do God’s will with whatever gifts and opportunities we have. This will bring not just the momentary pleasure of applause but the deeper joy that comes from living the real purpose of our lives.

May the Lord give us courage when things go wrong, strengthen our faith and hope in His promises and with love of His will! Amen!! Good morning and happy weekend!!!
