Memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church

Memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church

Gen. 3:9-15.20, Jn 19:25-34. It is fitting to celebrate the memorial of Mary, mother of the Church just after the Pentecost experience. One of the greatest gifts of the Lord is that of His mother. As we celebrate, mother of the Church, we renew our appreciation of this gift of Mary and we receive this gift of the Lord more fully into our lives. Today’s first reading describes how Mary exercised her motherly role among the disciples. She prayed with them, as they wait for the coming of the Holy Spirit, whom the risen Lord promised to send. She was among the disciples lending her prayer to theirs, as they all prepare for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Mary as mother is among us today, praying with us, praying for us, supporting us as we wait for the promised Holy Spirit.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus declares that from the time of His Crucifixion, His mother is to be the mother of the beloved disciple and the beloved disciple is to be her son. Since the disciple was never given a name, he stands in for us who are the Lord’s beloved disciples. We can substitute his name for ours. Jesus draws us into His family; we become His brothers and sisters, calling God our Father and Mary our mother. At the Cross, Mary is proclaimed mother of disciples who gather as the Church.

May the Lord cleanse and refresh us in the waters of the Spirit and where there is anguish and sin, bring healing and rebirth! Amen!! Have a fruitful week!!!
