Memorial of St Justin the Martyr

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Sirach 42:15-25, Mark 10:46-52. The wonders of God’s creation are proclaimed in today’s first reading, from outward things to inner mysteries, from the beauty of nature to the depths of the human heart where emotions vibrate and reasons may clash: “God plumbs the depths and penetrates the heart, and understands their inmost being. How beautiful are all his works… to meet each need, each creature is preserved.” In today’s Gospel, Jesus was critical of those who prevented others from coming to believe in Him. He reproved His disciples for preventing children being brought for blessing. He ignored those who tried to prevent blind Bartimaeus from making contact with Him.

Rather than shutting doors against people, Jesus wants us to open up the Kingdom of Heaven to others. We are to lead each other to the Lord, reveal the Lord to each other and, in so doing, support one another on our journey towards God. With strong conviction, Justin the martyr encouraged Christians under persecution and explained the depth of Christian faith to the Roman authority with his apologetical writings. Justin completely dedicated his life to the service of God and in his persistence in enduring all the challenges and persecutions he faced, even right up to the moment of his martyrdom, always full of faith and commitment to God.

May the Lord sustain the hope of all who suffer for their belief and bring us to a greater commitment in the Divine presence! Amen!! Happy New month and have a productive month!!!
